CFOSAT 3rd International Science Team Meeting - September 12-14, 2022

From September 12 to 14, the third meeting of the international scientific community was held, dedicated to the exploitation of data acquired by the Franco-Chinese oceanographic satellite CFOSAT launched in 2018. This symposium confirmed the operational interest of satellite measurements and the quality of work done by many laboratories and scientific organizations.

These three days of hybrid face-to-face and remote exchanges with China were organized by CNES in collaboration with LATMOS and Météo-France. They gathered an average of one hundred participants per day, mainly from China and France.

A total of 45 scientific presentations were made available to participants on the conference website: https: //cfosatst.aviso.altimetry.fr/, and 35 of them were presented orally in the international sessions.

These presentations confirmed that CFOSAT data analysis has entered the era of scientific exploitation. Several remarkable advances were demonstrated and very promising results were presented on important geophysical processes such as

  • Winds and waves in tropical cyclones,
  • The impact of winds and waves in the air-sea flow,
  • Waves in the open ocean but also in coastal areas,
  • Wave - current interactions,
  • The detection of sea ice signatures.

These results, added to the progress made on the quality of the products, and to the operational assimilation by Météo France of SWIM spectral data, reaffirm the interest and added value for operational and scientific oceanography of the CFOSAT mission, the first of its kind, with simultaneous measurements of wind and wave spectra data
