The maritime history of Saint-Malo

The history of Saint-Malo is forever linked to the sea

Many shipowners, navigators, privateers and great explorers have written the most beautiful pages.

  • René Duguay Trouin, Captain of the Royal Navy,
  • Robert Surcouf, the King of the privateers,
  • Jacques Cartier, discoverer of Canada,
  • Mahé de la Bourdonnais, Captain for the East India Company.

The stories and exploits of these "Gentlemen of Saint-Malo" remain engraved in the memory and temperament of today's Malouins.

Some museums such as the Cap-horniers museum at the Solidor Tower already tell this part of the history of the Corsair City to visitors and congressmen who stop over in Saint-Malo.

In 2022, the beautiful Maritime History Museum will open its doors to display the city's maritime history and heritage

  • How Saint-Malo became an enviable port with the opening of maritime routes to Spain, the Americas, the South Seas, the Far East...
  • How fishing developed there, notably through the cod saga...

This futuristic building, designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, will be located a few blocks from the Palais des Congrès and will open its doors in June 2022.
